Catalog Description

Provides a working knowledge of programming basics, problem solving, algorithm development, debugging strategies, and a modern programming environment. This course also facilitates acquisition of skills that can be applied to problem solving using programs and the practice of computer science. This course is intended for majors and non-majors. Students who have completed CSCI 1250 or its equivalent with a B- or better may not take this course.

Course Outcomes

  • Construct and analyze algorithms in the context of a pseudocode that is executable only "by hand and mind."
  • Work in teams to solve complex problems by dividing into smaller component problems.
  • Use a set of interdependent skills to identify problems; decipher the purpose(s); uncover the assumptions; recognize and using different paradigms; demonstrate different methods of reasoning; examine data; and create alternate solutions.
  • Understand basic programming concepts and data types
  • Do manual and automated debugging of programs
  • Manipulate files and folders
  • Build basic input, output, and computation statements in the current programming environment
