CSCI 4037

Introduces the field of computational linguistics including text analytics and natural language processing (NLP). This course offers state-of-the-art technologies to create systems that can understand and produce language for applications such as information extraction, machine translation, automatic summarization, and question-answering.

CSCI 3020 with a C- or better

• Define the basic concepts in natural language processing and text analytics as well as the state- of-the-art technologies in this domain.
• Utilize existing NLP technology to extract information from any given text.
• Critique and defend different NLP techniques (e.g., shallow vs deep NLP parsing) and their suitability to a given problem.
• Design NLP applications using state-of-the-art technologies to extract knowledge from information in text form.
• Investigate current research works in NLP and compare the NLP techniques used in different fields (e.g., healthcare, cybersecurity, etc.)
