CSCI 4727

The study of operating systems which are the primary resource managers of computer hardware. The main features provided by operating systems, including process management, storage management, processor management, and auxiliary storage management are studied in detail. Topics of networking and security are introduced. Case studies of representative commercial operating systems highlight the main features common to operating systems. Use of the computing laboratory is an integral part of the course.

CSCI 3160 and CSCI 3230, each with a C or better

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the following aspects of operating system operation: o Process management, including threading. o Processor Scheduling o Virtual memory, including paging. o I/O and device management o File system management o Services for inter-task/inter-thread communication o Services for task/thread synchronization o Resource protection (i.e., access control)
• Demonstrate the ability to develop sets of programs and/or threads that use operating systems services to synchronize their operation, and to communicate with one another. ( Student Outcome CS1 )
